Terre Siciliane: Lava and a Lust for Life

Sicily is a melting pot, a bridge between worlds, and one of the oldest wine regions on the planet. An island brimming with history, life and passion. Let's take a tour.

    The World on an Island

Some might say that Sicily is the cultural heart of the Mediterranean, and we wouldn't disagree! This Italian island, nestled between Europe, Africa and Asia, has a long history of diverse cultural influences. Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Spanish and Bourbons have all left their mark on the island. If you order “Couscous in Trapani” in Sicily, you can reply with a “shukran” (Arabic for thank you). The Arab-Spanish influence is still alive in Sicilians today. If you find yourself in the old towns, be sure to keep an eye out for the churches and castles! They are a unique mix of all the cultures that shaped Sicily. Our must-see: the Cappella Palatina in Palermo, followed by a stroll through the old town.

Mineral resources from black earthThere are numerous myths surrounding Mount Etna. It stands for elemental force and mysticism, is a stage for gods, demons and monsters. It is a UNSECO World Heritage Site and is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. It may be hard to believe, but its barren lava and volcanic soils offer particularly fertile soil. The internationally sought-after "Etna Rosso" and "Etna Bianco" wines grow at altitudes of between 450 and over 1,000 metres. Red and white. Powerful and fresh. But always elegant. That's why they are also known as the "Burgundy of the South". For all gourmets: Citrus fruits, pistachios, olives, hazelnuts and figs also thrive on Etna's soil.
A magical Italian autumn Most tourists have left the island. Temperatures have dropped to a pleasant 25 degrees. Autumn is harvest time in Sicily! In September, the winegrowers begin to harvest their grapes - usually by hand. The harvest is accompanied by traditional festivals such as the Festa della Vendemmia (grape harvest festival). There is drinking, eating and dancing. For us, this is a magical time! Our secret food pairing tip: Agnello alla Siciliana with Etna Rosso. Buon appetito!
