    Rioja

    Welcome to La Rioja!

Spain: A passion for wine, culture & nature

There are many things that make Rioja unique. However, this northern Spanish province is world-famous for its Tempranillo red wines: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental. Or, in other words: classic, fresh and fruity. Just like its star wines, the region itself is split into three parts: the autonomous La Rioja, Navarre and the Basque Country, with the Ebro river flowing through its heart.

There’s something for every outdoor enthusiast: Mediterranean forests, mountains and clear mountain lakes are perfect for hiking, trekking, cycling, horse riding or canoeing. And of course, for vineyard tours followed by a picnic. Psst, for anyone just passing through: the Camino de Santiago also runs through Rioja!

Calle Laurel (located in the capital Logroño) is lined with tapas shops and bars. The celebration is about enjoyment, not excess. Cocktails: not a thing! Vino: ¡Sí, por favour! Small museums and local artisans invite culture lovers to browse. For all those who want to let themselves drift: When strolling through Rioja, keep your eyes peeled for the avant-garde bodegas. A real eye-catcher.
The great wine battleEvery year on 29 June, the great wine battle takes place in Rioja. What kind of battle? Don't worry, it's even UNESCO-protected. Thousands of people take to the streets for the great wine battle. All dressed in white and armed with red wine in water pistols, bottles or hoses. Then it's "Red wine march!" and people splash each other. This is followed by eating, dancing and celebrating together.tradition and modernityRioja is Spain's oldest protected designation of origin. And anything but stagnant. The almost 600 wineries and their more than 20,000 winegrowers are constantly developing their wines. The development of new grape varieties is just one of many possibilities. In La Rioja, it rarely stops at one glass. And that's a good thing.
