Enjoy a bug-free summer – with clever insect screens

Hello summer, it’s great to see you again. We’ve missed you – the long evenings on the patio, freshly squeezed lemonade, and ice pops. There’s just one thing we could do without: all the creepy crawlies in our homes. Mosquitoes, flies, wasps and ants everywhere. Outside? Yes please! Inside? No thanks! So how do you gently get the message across to these uninvited guests? It’s simple: with a reliable insect screen.

    Why use an insect screen?

Fly screens and similar products are a must-have during the warmer months. They'll make your life easier in no time.

    1. Sleep better

Is annoying buzzing and nightly insect bites robbing you of your sleep? A reliable insect screen ensures peaceful, restful summer nights – keeping those little pests outside where they belong.

    2. Good for your health

Put an end to itchy bites and nasty swelling! A screen keeps those little tormentors at bay and helps minimise the risk of allergic reactions.

    3. A physical barrier, not a chemical one

Insect sprays can pollute the air in your home and leave chemical residue on furniture and fabrics. Fly screens for windows and doors are the clever, completely chemical-free alternative for a healthy home environment.

    4. Keep things clean

Insects can leave unsightly marks on walls, lamps and window panes. With an insect screen, your home stays clean – and your food and refreshing summer drinks are safe from hungry wasps.

    5. Ideal for rental properties

Good news: insect screens are a welcome addition to rental properties too – especially no-drill options. Thanks to clever adhesive, Velcro, magnetic or clamp systems, these handy helpers can be installed in your home without a drill. Not only is it quick, easy and convenient, but it also leaves no residue. Simply take it down, clean the surface, and you're done.

And don't forget: your food will also benefit from a good insect screen. Finally, no more wasps in your homemade lemonade!

    2. Frame Screens

Frame screens are a great option for standard-sized windows and doors. They consist of a fixed frame with the insect screen already fitted. Not only do they look great, but they're also easy to install and remove. But which frame screen is the best fit for your home?

    • Plastic frames: The lightweight option for insect screens. They're quick to install and ideal for standard sizes – especially the pop-up screen. Simply clip it in and you're done.

    • Adjustable Aluminium Frames: Need flexibility without the fuss? Telescopic aluminium frames offer both. You can adjust them to fit your windows and doors in just a few simple steps – with no drilling or sawing required. Everything you need for assembly is included. No extra materials needed.

    • Custom-fit Aluminium Frames: Want a fly screen that fits like a glove? Get your tools out and cut these frame systems to the exact size of your windows and doors. It might take a bit more effort, but the result is a more precise fit. Perfect for non-standard sizes and tricky installation spots.

Top Tip: Getting the right measurements for your fly screen is essential. Before you buy, make sure to measure the exact size of your window or door – both the length and the width. This is especially important if you have built-in roller blinds, as the roller boxes and guide rails must not obstruct the screen.

    3. Insect Traps with UV Light

You don't always have to rely on classic insect screens for your doors and windows. Why not try an electric UV trap for a change? The principle is simple: they use UV radiation to imitate natural sunlight. This is irresistible to insects – just like the famous saying "like a moth to a flame". They fly straight towards the light and are caught in the trap.

The Dos and Don'ts of Insect Protection

A bug-free home that looks good too? Of course, it's no problem with these handy tips and tricks.

    Dos

Fine-mesh screens: The finer the mesh, the fewer insects in your home. You can keep mosquitoes out with a mesh size of 1.1 to 1.5 millimetres, but for smaller pests like fruit flies, it should be even finer.

Don't forget skylights: Many an uninvited insect can sneak in through them – so be sure to fit a fly screen.

Keep it clean: Pollen, dirt and dust can quickly get caught in the mesh, blocking your view and airflow. But don't worry: with a little water and a brush, you'll have your screen clean again in no time.

Two is better than one: Combine fly screens with electric UV traps for extra protection.

    Don'ts

Cleaning too wet: Moisture on the screen not only damages the fine material, but also creates an ideal breeding ground for mould.

Less is more? Not with fly screens. If the balcony door is sealed, they'll just come in through the tilted kitchen window instead.

Location is everything: UV insect traps should not be placed where they have to compete with the room's lighting.
