What is thermal clothing? Thermal clothing is a broad term, but basically means functional clothing that protects you from cooling down in the rain, wind and, above all, the cold. Thermal clothing transforms your body heat into armour against sub-zero temperatures. At the same time, it transports moisture away from the body - an important protection against cooling down! Depending on its function and fibres, it also prevents rain or wind from penetrating. Thermal clothing is available for children and adults, for the head, feet and the whole body.
What materials are thermal clothing made of? From men's thermal socks to children's long-sleeved shirts, thermal clothing is available in all kinds of materials. Natural and functional fibres are usually mixed. The closer the thermal layer is to the body, the higher the proportion of natural materials. Wool or cotton with a touch of synthetic fibres provide warmth and an ideal fit as the first layer. Jackets or coats designed to keep out wind and rain are made from tightly woven and often impregnated synthetic fibres - nothing can get through!
How do I wear thermal clothing? Ideally, you should wear thermal clothing in smart layers. The most important thing is the first layer, which forms a thermal cushion through body contact. Sports underwear or a thermal functional shirt, for example, fit perfectly and cover the skin completely. Look for breathable fibres and choose the right size. A rain or wind-repellent top layer - for example a ladies' jacket - may be slightly wider. Pay particular attention to the fit of the cuffs and the right length for your body and your activities. Don't forget: Most of the heat is lost through the head - so wear a hat!
How do I care for thermal clothing? High-quality thermal clothing deserves good care. Always wash shirts, socks, leggings etc. at low temperatures, use a liquid detergent and avoid fabric softener. The tumble dryer is also off, air drying is a better idea. Water-repellent thermal clothing can be treated with waterproofing sprays after cleaning so that rain really doesn't stand a chance. And now? Get out into the fresh air - no matter what the weather forecast says!
